Current Clinical Research: Opportunities to Participate

A major focus of The Stroke Center – Dallas is clinical research. We are recruiting subjects for an ongoing clinical trial of aphasia recovery in collaboration with investigators from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. All research activities are carried out on-site at The Stroke Center – Dallas in the T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences, 5500 Southwestern Medical Avenue, Dallas, TX.

We are Looking for Qualified Participants

Recruitment is underway for a study exploring the use of non-invasive brain stimulation (transcranial direct current stimulation-tDCS) paired with impairment level language therapy to facilitate recovery from aphasia. Participants receive 36 hours of language therapy delivered 1.5 hours per day four days per week for six weeks. Follow-up assessments continue four weeks after the study ends.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in the Treatment of Aphasia: A Pilot Study

The long term goal of this research is to determine if non-invasive brain stimulation will facilitate recovery from behavioral deficits subsequent to stroke. The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the efficacy of tDCS paired with 36 hours of language therapy to accelerate recovery from aphasia across a seven-week treatment period. Participants will receive on a random basis six weeks of real or sham tDCS, paired with language treatment 1.5 hours per day for four days per week. The research team is led by Dr. Delaina Walker-Batson of Texas Woman's University and Dr. Mark Johnson of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. This study is available at no charge to persons who qualify. Number of subjects: 16. Time period: 2 years.
